Senior Activities at the Beatrice YMCA

Movement Improvement

Movement Improvement is a new exercise program designed to empower adults with Parkinson’s disease by optimizing their physical function and helping to delay the progression of symptoms. This exercise program will be ran by a certified instructor right here at our Beatrice Y!  The exercises in the class vary, and can be adapted to each individual’s needs. The program aims to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease decrease fall risk, improve posture and gait, minimize fatigue, reduce rigidity, return arm swing and maintain or regain independence.  This class is not only for those with Parkinson’s disease, but for anyone who would benefit! If you have a loved one at home that is unable to attend, please feel free to come and learn how you can help your loved one at home.
This 45-minute class is held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 11:15 am.  Please join us!

BABY BOOMERS WEIGHTS AND CARDIO

Baby Boomers Weights and Cardio is 30 to 40 minutes of light and easy aerobic exercise designed to gently bring your heart rate up for a short time. Light weights, strength bands, and stability balls are mixed in to strengthen muscles for a light total body class.  This class is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:15 am – 11:00 am.

SILVERSNEAKERS PROGRAM

The SilverSneakers Fitness program is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. Healthways has been providing innovative health benefits for older adults for more than two decades. Today more than 65 Medicare health plans offer the program as a benefit to members across the nation. Regular participation in the program has been proven to help older adults manage their health and increase strength, balance and endurance.

WHAT ARE SILVERSNEAKERS CLASSES?

SilverSneakers classes are total-body conditioning classes designed to increase muscular strength, endurance, range of movement, flexibility, balance, agility and coordination. They range from 45 to 60 minutes and are offered at least twice a week. Classes typically involve the use of hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a small exercise ball. In some classes, a chair may be available for seating or additional support.

WHO TEACHES THE CLASSES?

SilverSneakers classes are taught by credentialed instructors who are specially trained in leading fitness programs for aging adults. All SilverSneakers class instructors undergo an in-person training and evaluation process to become a SilverSneakers instructor.

WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A MEMBERSHIP AT A FITNESS LOCATION?

If you currently belong to a SilverSneakers participating location, you can request that your existing membership be “frozen.” If your current membership is not with a SilverSneakers participating location, then you will still be responsible for any arrangement you have with that establishment.
